The Legion of Mary is an International Lay-Apostolic Organization for Catholics only. It was founded on 7th September 1921 by Bro. Frank Duff, a lay person.   Now it has over 3 million active members spread over all the continents of the world.  Concilium is the highest governing body for this worldwide organization and is based in Dublin, Ireland.  In West Malaysia, the Kuala Lumpur Regia is the local governing body for the Legion of Mary.

The object of the Legion of Mary is the Glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayers and active co-operation, under ecclesiastical guidance, in Mary’s and the Church’s work of crushing the head of the serpent and advancing the reign of Christ.

The Legion of Mary is at the disposal of the bishop of the diocese and the parish priest for any and every form of social service and Catholic action which these authorities may deem suitable to the Legionaries and useful for the welfare of the Church.  Legionaries will never engage in any of these services whatsoever in a parish without the sanction of the parish priest or of the Bishop.  Legionaries’ work include home visitation to the sick, aged, lonely, newly baptized, marginalized and lapsed Catholics besides hospital visits, prison visit,  crowd contact, promotion of devotion to Mother Mary,  dissemination of Catholic literatures/articles, RCIA facilitators, extraordinary ministers and religion education.

In each parish, the unit of the  Legion of Mary is called Praesidium.  If there are more than 3 Praesidia, then a council known as Curia can be formed to oversee these praesidia.   In each praesidium, members are obliged to come together for the weekly meeting .  At the meeting  an altar with our Lady’s statue of Immaculate Conception  is set up on the table.  Placed on the altar are 2 vases of fresh flowers, 2 lighted candles and the Vexillum.  Members sit around the altar and the president presides over the meeting commencing with the  Legion prayers which include the Rosary and discussion of the work done.  Each week, members are assign to do active apostolic work. The  parish priest is the spiritual director of the praesidium
To-date the church of the Holy Family of Kajang has 3 Praesidia namely:

---------------Recent News--------------

The Legion of Mary is a Catholic Lay Association founded by Frank Duff, a lay person, in Dublin, Ireland on the 7th September 1921.  Today the Legion of Mary has spread to many countries in the world and there are more than 3 million Legionaries serving in God’s vineyard.

This year the Legionaries worldwide will commemorate their 90th Anniversary with the theme “The Charism of Frank Duff and the Legion of Mary”.  Here in Peninsula Malaysia, the Legion of Mary’s highest council, Kuala Lumpur Regia had their  celebration on 31st August 2011 at the Church of the Holy Family, Kajang.

Almost 2,000 Legionaries from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Ipoh, Johore and Malacca attended this celebration in Kajang. Our Archbishop Murphy Pakiam came to address the participants despite his busy schedule. Quoting from the Apostolic Exhortation Verbum Domini - The Word of God in the life and mission of the Church, he highlighted Mary's life as a life lived by the Word and totally shaped by the Word, we too are encouraged to imitate Mary, to enter into the mystery of faith, allowing Jesus to dwell in our lives  He was happy to see so many legionaries gathered in Kajang for this auspicious occasion and expressed his warmest anniversary wishes to this great lay organization and its members.

The celebrations started at 1:30 pm with Sing-along, Legion Prayers, Meditated Rosary and video on life of Frank Duff, followed by a Thanksgiving Mass concelebrated by 4 priests and candle-light procession of Our Lady statue carried by Legionaries. It concluded with a 82-table fellowship Chinese dinner cum entertainment and recognition award for long serving Legionaries at 7.30pm.  A 9-tiers Anniversary Cake was cut to commemorate this great occasion.

All praise and thanks be to God and our Blessed Virgin Mother Mary for giving us a great day where the weather was so good and everything went off smoothly and joyfully.
Also a million thanks to both the priests and parishioners of  the Holy Family Church, Kajang for their wonderful support, kind co-operation and help.  God bless.
